Slate Tec. The Original Lightweight Slate Roof System: by Genuine Roof Systems
Natural slate is one of the oldest forms of roofing materials in existence, dating back centuries. Slate is well known to be a durable construction material that will withstand anything mother nature has to throw at it. With all the benefits of natural slate roofing,
there comes a heavy price, literally. The added weight of putting the actual stone on a roof structure is quite high compared to materials
like wood or asphalt shingles. This added weight is the very problem that has, in the last few decades, created a new industry within
the high-end roofing market. The Lightweight Slate Roofing industry is now well developed, with many companies offering a
multitude of products, all claiming to be the “best alternative to traditional slate roofing”. There are two main categories within this
growing industry, on one side you have synthetic slate manufacturers (plastic look-a-likes), and on the other, you have lightweight
natural slate application methods (natural stone installed in such a way to lower its weight). Obviously, both have their pros and
cons. In this entry, we’ll look at the latter of the two and try to distinguish the good lightweight roofing slates from the… not so good.
Natural Slate Grading & Quality
Not all lightweight roofing slate is created equally. Weight savings aside, the grade of the slate matters.
So how is a natural product like slate graded? What makes stone from one part of the globe better than the stone from another
location? With so many products entering the market claiming to supply only top-quality natural roofing slate; it is wise to verify
what grade of slate it is that you are looking at. Independent testing of slate reveals its ability to protect and enhance the aesthetic
appeal of a building over a long period of time. This type of testing is a key to determining the overall cost of ownership and the
value a slate roof will add to a property.
SlateTec Lightweight Slate Roofing comes from globally recognized quarries like the Greenstone Slate Company in Vermont, USA.
This Vermont roofing slate meets the ASTM C406 - S1 rated slate standard (more below), the highest grade possible through direct
independent testing by the National Slate Association. In fact, Vermont slate has all the physical characteristics of the best quality
slate available worldwide, unlike some other quarries that supply inferior S2 and S3 grade slate. An S1 rating is important and can
tell you what kind of lifespan you should expect from the stone over time. A SlateTec Lightweight Slate Roof is expected to have a
useful lifespan from 75 to more than 300 years. This is because we supply only S1 grade stone from quarries like Greenstone Slate.
